According to Nigeria On 26th June, the Katsina Police Command reported arrests of 40 suspected rapists within the period of the Covid19 lockdown, not less than 20 of these people claimed innocent after committing the crime.
Another important factor that mostly affects the increase in rape cases is the acceptance of innocence by some people which is unknown to them that rape cannot be a coincidence, it is intentional. As much as rape has spread over the world, the united nations report that their legislature has approved a law to marry rapist in the country; these and many more increase the rate of rape and they claim to be innocent. A slogan says "PUNISH RAPIST NOT VICTIMS." The reverse goes for a lot of cases in Nigeria.
Do you know what a victim can face due to rape?
Rape is a deeply traumatic experience, particularly for teenagers who are victims. It can have devastating and long-lasting effects, both physically and emotionally.
The ordeal of being violated can cause immense anguish, pain, and a loss of trust in others. The impact may shatter a teenager's sense of self, leading to feelings of shame, guilt, and powerlessness. The experience of rape can severely disrupt a teenager's mental health.
Many victims suffer from anxiety, depression, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and suicidal thoughts or behaviors. They may struggle with nightmares, and flashbacks, and have difficulty forming healthy relationships.
The breakdown in emotional instability of a victim can also affect their ability to concentrate, perform academically, and have a good personality. Naturally, the effect rape has can be disastrous. Victims may have physical injuries, such as bruises, cuts, or broken bones.
There is also a risk of contracting sexually transmitted infections (STI) or becoming pregnant if contraception is not used. These physical consequences can compound the mental and emotional trauma already experienced.
My meeting with a young teenage girl who is a victim of rape gave me an experience that the tolling effect rape can have on its victim cannot be measured. Her education was stopped at age 14 and lost family love and care which made her lose joy peace and happiness. Her level of contention for revenge is unimaginable.
. Kenny a 22-year-old lady was raped by a relative of hers who is a medical practitioner. She got pregnant and the man denied the pregnancy and her family members believed. She was sent to the street and for the last 8 years, she has lost both family love and care. Her intense revenge for revenge on the guys and her marriage to be soon held is what baffled me. This is part of what some victims can face and experience.
In addition, the aftermath of rape often involves navigating a complex legal and justice system. Victims may face challenges and barriers to reporting the crime, fear of punishment, or lack of support from authorities. This can further aggregate feelings of vulnerability and isolation. It is crucial to acknowledge the immense toll rape takes on teenage victims. Providing comprehensive support, such as counseling, medical care, and access to legal resources, is vital in helping them heal and rebuild their lives
It is also essential to foster a culture of consent, respect, and empathy to prevent further instances of sexual violence and to provide a safe environment for survivors to come forward and seek justice. the victim will be blamed and the rapist unquestioned. Do not be deceived by the words, the look, and the reactions.
Rape is not a coincidence, it is intentional.
